Learn how to write incisive book, music, film, or fill-in-the-blanks reviews for publication. The impulse to write can spring from the urge to tell stories, but it can also stem from the desire to convince, cajole, champion, comment on and criticize. This 3-hour intensive will introduce you to writing tight, trenchant, saleable criticism. We’ll focus on how to write reviews that prosecute a clear line of argument and POV and think expansively about the work, situating it in the wider culture. We’ll also consider the occupational hazards, including how to get off the fence and feel emboldened to express your opinions and how to put “yourself” into your critical writing without becoming indulgent, self-referential and generally trying to steal the show. Plus, the intensive will introduce you to more ideas that you can work through for the longer, 5-week reviewing workshop scheduled to begin in May.
